I’m usually singing the constant praise of Reaper in this blog. This time I’m going to point out a big weakness, in my opinion. The bundled VST effects are either too complicated for me or not very good. After numerous attempts with ReDelay and Reverberate I get only crap results. What I want is more self-contained effects with easier settings – like a stompbox. I’ve never failed to get a good tone with the delay sims in my Pod X3 for instance.
The good people at the Reaper forums pointed me in the right direction. A company called Kjearhus Audio has free “appliance-like” VSTs for Delay, Chorus, Reverb, EQ, Compressor, Flanger, Phaser and Limiter.
Immediately after applying the delay I can say it sounds awesome! I’m generally not found of graphic UIs that mimic real life things, but I’m willing to accept it since I obviously couldn’t handle the more computer-oriented UI of ReDelay.
So how do you get these VSTs? Well, here’s the big problem. The Kjearhus Audio site is gone… I think they unfortunately have gone out of business.
I found them at another site though (don’t know if its copyrigheously ok, but since they’re free…): http://grebz.fr/musique_homestudio_tutorial_required_6_english.php
Here’s a new mix of my To Tame a Land cover with the Kjaerhus delay:
